A second intelligence test reaffirmed how creative racoons can be when they want some hard-to-reach food. All vertebrates show some degree of intelligence. One paradigm of animal intelligence research is known as the Aesop’s Fable test, based on the the story of the thirsty crow. Raccoons are notoriously pesky, but are they as clever as a crow? Scientists used a test to see if raccoons could discern cause and effect by displacing water to access food. Crows have passed the test in the past, but a new paper used the fable to test raccoons for the first time. Social skills, emotional capacity, problem-solving, and mathematical ability also indicate intelligence. Scientists are always discovering new facets of animal intelligence and discovering new things about what our animal friends are capable of learning. Raccoons have a large array of vocalizations. The same eight racoons were again presented with a cylinder filled with water and floating marshmallows. This concludes that raccoons are closer to human intelligence than may have been expected. The Aesop’s Fable test measures the intelligence of animals based on their ability to solve puzzles and find food. Raccoons Can Make Over 50 Different Noises.
